ABSTRACT Optimization of the use of water and the possibility of using residues as substrate in the black pepper production chain can yield economic and environmental benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biometric and physiological traits of black pepper plantlets (Piper nigrum L.), cv. Bragantina, at different irrigation levels and soilless substrates. Plantlets were grown for 120 days on three substrates [biosolid + crushed coconut fiber (3:1, by volume); biosolid + granitic rock powder (3:1, by volume); and biosolid + crushed coconut fiber + granitic rock powder (2:1:1, by volume)] and at five irrigation levels [36 % (very low); 55 % (low); 85 % (moderate); 100 % (well-irrigated); and 126 % of the reference irrigation level (over-irrigated)]. The biometric traits evaluated increased as the irrigation levels increased, with the exception of root dry mass, which was not influenced by this factor, nor water use efficiency, which decreased as the irrigation levels increased. In general, plants grown with a mixture of the three wastes (biosolid + crushed coconut fiber + granitic rock powder) exhibited higher values for biometric variables and chlorophyll content when they were moderately, well or over-irrigated, in comparison with the other two substrates. It was possible to achieve the plantlet commercial standard using this three waste mixture and the moderate irrigation level.

Abstract This study evaluated the production of Inga laurina (Sw.) Willd seedlings in 110 and 280 cm3 tube containers and growing doses (0, 3, 6 and 12 kg m-3) of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) (15-09-12) and their performance at 5 and 12 months after outplanting. The experiment was conducted using a randomized split-plot design, in a 2 x 4 arrangement (tube volumes x CRF doses). Stabilized sewage sludge from urban origin was used as substrate. It was assessed growth and biomass of the seedlings in nursery, as well as survival and growth after outplanting. Containers of 280 cm3 and doses between 6 to 12 kg m-3 produced seedlings in less time, with higher growth and biomass. At 12 months after outplanting, seedlings presented acceptable growth and mortality rate with doses equal or greater than 6 and 3 kg m-3 of CRF, respectively, for the 110 and 280 cm3 tube.

RESUMO Tradicionalmente, viveiros florestais não utilizam manejo da irrigação, comprometendo a eficiência do sistema e a qualidade das mudas. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a qualidade de mudas sob diferentes níveis de irrigação e do substrato composto por biossólido puro, e o crescimento inicial de três espécies arbóreas de Mata Atlântica, produzidas com manejo automático da irrigação. Quatro níveis de irrigação (V1 a V4) foram aplicados por gotejamento em mudas de Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, Cytharexyllum myrianthum Chamiáo e Ceiba speciosa Ravenna. Em seguida, as mudas foram plantadas para avaliar seu crescimento inicial em vasos. A água foi aplicada em resposta à necessidade das espécies e os volumes foram medidos por sensores de fluxo de água, conectados a uma placa Arduino MEGA. Medidas de altura, diâmetro do colo, área foliar, massa seca e teor de clorofila foram utilizadas para avaliar o desenvolvimento das plantas na fase de mudas e nos estágios iniciais de crescimento. Mudas que receberam o maior volume médio de água (V4) tiveram maior taxa de crescimento em altura e diâmetro do colo para as três espécies estudadas. Apesar disso, as mudas que receberam menor volume de água (V1) atingem tamanhos semelhantes às do tratamento V4 em vasos. Os dados de crescimento e qualidade das plantas, nas duas fases analisadas, juntamente com a agregação do substrato, indicam que o nível ideal de irrigação está vinculado aos tratamentos que receberam os maiores volumes de água (V3 e V4) na fase de produção de mudas. Os resultados obtidos indicam que é possível economizar água e produzir mudas de espécies florestais com qualidade, garantindo sua sobrevivência no campo.

ABSTRACT Traditionally, irrigation management has not been used in forest nurseries, compromising the efficiency of the system and the quality of seedlings. In this study, we evaluated the quality of seedlings under different irrigation levels and the substrate composed of pure biosolid, and the initial growth of three Atlantic Forest tree species, produced with automated irrigation management. Four irrigation levels (V1 to V4) were applied by dripping on Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, Cytharexyllum myrianthum Chamiáo and Ceiba speciosa Ravenna seedlings. After that, the seedlings were planted to evaluate their early growth in pots. The water was applied in response to species requirement and the volume was measured by water flow sensors, connected to an Arduino MEGA board. Height, collar diameter, leaf area, dry mass and chlorophyll content measurements were used to assess plant development on the seedling and early growth stages. Seedlings that received the highest average volume of water (V4) had a higher rate of growth in height and collar diameter for the three species studied. Despite this, the seedlings that received a smaller volume of water (V1) achieve similar size than V4 ones in pots. The plant growth and quality data, in the two phases analyzed, together with the aggregation of the substrate, indicate that the ideal irrigation level is linked to treatments that received the highest volumes of water (V3 and V4) in the seedling production phase. The results obtained indicate that it is possible to save water and produce seedlings of forest species with quality, ensuring their survival in the field.

RESUMO A matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) e os atributos químicos do solo são importantes indicadores de qualidade de solo. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de estratégias de controle de plantas espontâneas em uma área de restauração florestal sobre a qualidade da MOS e a fertilidade do solo. Para isso, foram estabelecidos três métodos de controle de plantas espontâneas: i) mecânico (MEC); ii) químico (QUI) e, iii) químico-cultural (QC) avaliados em um delineamento em blocos casualizados. Após 13 meses foram coletadas amostras de solo (0-10 cm) nas quais se determinaram a respiração basal por 21 dias; o carbono orgânico total (COT), o carbono lábil (CL); as frações químicas da MOS [humina (H), ácido húmico (AH) e ácido fúlvico (AF)] e a fertilidade do solo. Nos dias 1, 3 e 7 foram verificados maiores valores de respiração basal do solo, contudo, não foram encontradas diferenças entre as estratégias de controle. Foram verificadas pequenas alterações na qualidade da MOS e fertilidade do solo. O MEC apresentou valores (até 11 %) mais elevados de CL, propiciado pela intensificação dos tratos silviculturais. Todas as estratégias de controle da vegetação espontânea após 13 meses de aplicação mostraram-se positivas com relação à qualidade da MOS e a fertilidade do solo, com destaque para o CL, devido a sua relação com o acumulo ou perda da MOS e a imediata resposta as alterações no uso e manejo do solo.

ABSTRACT Soil organic matter (SOM) and the chemical attributes of the soil are important indicators of soil quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of strategies for controlling spontaneous plants on SOM quality and soil fertility in an area of forest under restoration. Three methods for controlling spontaneous plants were established: i) mechanical (MCH), ii) chemical (CHM), and iii) chemical-cultural (CC), and evaluated using a randomized block design. After 13 months, soil samples were collected (0-10 cm) to determine basal respiration over 21 days, total organic carbon (TOC), labile carbon (LC), chemical fractions of the SOM [humine (H), humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA)], and soil fertility. On days 1, 3, and 7, higher values were seen for basal soil respiration, however, no differences were found between the control strategies. There was a small change in SOM quality and soil fertility. MCH showed higher values (up to 11%) for LC, due to the intense silvicultural management. After 13 months of application, each of the strategies for controlling spontaneous vegetation proved to be favorable in relation to SOM quality and soil fertility, especially for LC, due to its relationship with the accumulation or loss of SOM, and immediate response to changes in land use or management.

Resumo Na produção de mudas de espécies florestais há vários fatores que influenciam no seu crescimento. Dentre estes, um dos mais importantes é a composição do substrato. Nesse sentido, é essencial a seleção de bons constituintes que atendam a essa demanda. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento inicial de mudas de Eucalyptus urophylla, Peltophorum dubium e Eremanthus erythropappus, produzidas em diferentes formulações de substratos. Para cada espécie, foi instalado e conduzido um experimento, utilizando-se nas formulações os constituintes casca de arroz compostada, casca de café compostada, fibra de coco e substrato comercial. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC), constituídos por oito tratamentos, cinco repetições e 20 mudas por parcela. Para avaliação da qualidade das mudas, aos 120 dias foram mensuradas as variáveis altura, diâmetro do coleto, peso de matéria seca da parte aérea, peso de matéria seca do sistema radicular e índice de qualidade de Dickson. Como análises qualitativas, foram avaliadas a facilidade de retirada das mudas do tubete e a agregação das raízes ao substrato. Os resultados encontrados após a avaliação atestaram que as mudas produzidas nos tratamentos formulados com casca de café compostada apresentaram valores superiores para a maioria das variáveis analisadas, quando comparado com as mudas produzidas nos tratamentos formulados com a casca de arroz e na testemunha. Para as três espécies, indica-se a utilização da proporção de 40% de casca de café compostada com 40% de substrato comercial e 20% de fibra de coco para composição do substrato.

Abstract In the production of forest species seedlings there are several factors that influence their growth. Among these, one of the most important is the composition of the substrate. In this sense, it is essential to select good constituents that meet this demand. The objective of this work was to evaluate the initial growth of seedlings of Eucalyptus urophylla, Peltophorum dubium and Eremanthus erythropappus, produced in different substrate formulations. For each species, an experiment was installed and conducted, using composted rice husk, composted coffee husk, coconut fiber and commercial substrate in the formulations. The experiments were installed in a completely randomized design (DIC), consisting of eight treatments, five replications and 20 seedlings per plot. To evaluate the quality of seedlings, at 120 days the variables height, stem diameter, dry matter weight of the aerial part, dry matter weight of the root system and Dickson's quality index were measured. As qualitative analyzes, the ease of removing seedlings from the tube and the aggregation of roots to the substrate were evaluated. The results found after the evaluation attested that the seedlings produced in the treatments formulated with composted coffee husk presented higher values for most of the analyzed variables, when compared with the seedlings produced in the treatments formulated with the rice husk and in the control. For the three species, the use of the proportion of 40% of coffee husk composted with 40% of commercial substrate and 20% of coconut fiber for the composition of the substrate is indicated.

Resumo A restauração florestal em áreas de pastagens, dominadas por Urochloa spp. (braquiárias), apresenta custo relativamente elevado, principalmente pela dificuldade de controle dessa planta infestante. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a forma de controle de braquiárias mais eficiente para a formação de povoamento para restauração florestal. Foram comparadas quatro estratégias para controle de braquiária em área de restauração florestal no município de Bom Jardim - RJ: T1 - capina em faixas nas linhas de plantio e roçadas nas entrelinhas; T2 - capina em faixas nas linhas de plantio e aplicações do herbicida glyphosate (1,44 kg i.a. ha-1) nas entrelinhas; T3 - capina em área total e consórcio com leguminosas herbáceas fixadoras de nitrogênio; T4 - capina em faixas nas linhas de plantio, roçadas e consórcio com eucalipto nas entrelinhas. Avaliou-se o crescimento em altura, diâmetro no nível do solo e diâmetro de copa de dez espécies arbóreas em diferentes idades, bem como todos os custos envolvidos na aplicação e manutenção de cada tratamento, até 30 meses após o plantio. Em todas as épocas de avaliação, as plantas florestais apresentaram média de crescimento significativamente superior em altura e em diâmetro nos tratamentos de consórcio com leguminosas e aplicação de glyphosate (T3 e T2). Aos 24 meses após o plantio, a copa das árvores implantadas já recobria 80% a 90% da área da unidade experimental nesses tratamentos. Entretanto, o custo de manutenção do T3 foi quase o dobro das unidades de T1 e o custo deste último foi quase três vezes superior das unidades submetidas a T2. O consórcio de eucalipto nas entrelinhas de plantio não prejudicou, mas não beneficiou o crescimento das espécies nativas. O controle químico e o consórcio com leguminosas herbáceas podem ser apontados como alternativas eficazes para controle da braquiária dessa área, antecipando a formação dos povoamentos e resultando em economia de recursos.

Abstract Forest restoration in pastures dominated by Urochloa spp. (brachiaria) shows relatively high cost, mainly by the difficulty of controlling this weed. The objective of this work was to determine the most efficient brachyria control for forest restoration formation. Four different strategies for brachiaria control in the forest restoration area were compared in the city of Bom Jardim, Rio de Janeiro state: T1 weeding in strips in the planting lines and mowed between the lines; T2 weeding in strips in the planting lines and applications of glyphosate (1.44 kg i.a. ha-1) between the lines; T3 - weeding in total area and consortium with herbaceous legumes nitrogen-fixing; T4 - weeding in strips in the planting lines, mowing and consortium with eucalyptus between the lines. The growth in height, the diameter at ground level and the diameter of the top of ten forest species at different ages were evaluated, as well as all costs involved in the application and maintenance of each treatment, up to 30 months after planting. In every age of valuation, forest plants showed significantly higher average growth in height and diameter at the ground level in the treatment of consortium with herbaceous legumes and application of glyphosate. At 24 months after planting, the top of the trees that were introduced had already covered 80% to 90% of the area of experimental unit that received the T3 (legumes) and T2 (Glyphosate) treatments, respectively. However, the maintenance cost of the T3 was almost double the T1 units and the cost of the latter was almost three times higher than the units analyzed for T2. As a general rule, eucalyptus consortium between the lines of planting did not harm, but also did not benefit the growth of the native species planted up to 30 months after planting. Chemical control and consortium with herbaceous legumes can be pointed as effective alternatives to control the brachiaria of this area, anticipating the formation of stands and resulting in resource savings.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of four weed control strategies in forest setting stands linked by a set of Atlantic Forest tree species. Four treatments were employed: mechanical – manual hoeing and mowing; chemical – glyphosate herbicide application in the total area; chemical – cultural – herbicide spraying and herbaceous legume intercropping; chemical-mechanical – herbicide planting in rows and mowing in the interrows. Diameter, crown area and soil cover percentage of the eight tree species were assessed at 18 months. Herbicide spraying in total area promoted the greatest reduction in weed populations, as well as superior growth in height, diameter, crown area and soil cover of the tree species. More interventions were necessary in the treatment of mechanical weed control that has also shown the least growth of the tree species. The chemical method was the most effective in weed control and promoted the greatest growth of the tree species.

Resumo A fertilização na produção de mudas florestais é variável de acordo com o substrato, recipiente e o tipo de fertilizante utilizados. O fertilizante de liberação controlada (FLC) pode ser utilizado visando diminuir ou mesmo eliminar a necessidade de fertilização de cobertura. A dose de FLC aplicada pode variar de acordo com o volume do recipiente, considerando a quantidade de substrato disponível para as mudas em diferentes recipientes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento de mudas de Schizolobium parahyba produzidas com tubetes de 110 e 280 cm3 em doses crescentes de FLC (15-09-12) (0, 3, 6 e 12 kg m-3), bem como seu crescimento inicial e sobrevivência após plantio na região norte do estado do Rio de Janeiro. O estudo foi conduzido em arranjo fatorial 2 x 4 (recipientes x doses de FLC) com 5 repetições para cada tratamento. Como substrato foi utilizado lodo de esgoto de áreas urbanas, submetido a secagem em leitos ao ar livre. O crescimento das mudas no viveiro foi avaliado aos 93 dias após a repicagem e a sobrevivência e crescimento inicial em campo aos 5 e 12 meses após o plantio. As mudas de Schizolobium parahyba apresentaram maior crescimento em tubetes de 280 cm3 e responderam positivamente à aplicação de FLC, sendo que a dose de máxima eficiência técnica foi de 8,3 kg cm3 para esse tubete. Aos 12 meses após o plantio, mudas de todos os tratamentos apresentaram sobrevivência menor que 80%, ficando abaixo do recomendado para plantios de restauração florestal. A mortalidade das mudas ocorreu devido a cinco meses de déficit hídrico em solo argilo-arenoso. Considerando apenas os dados de viveiro, a combinação de tubete de 280 cm3, com a dose de FLC de 8,3 kg m-3 são recomendados para produção de mudas de Schizolobium parahyba.

Abstract Fertilization in the production of forest seedlings can vary according to the substrate, container and fertilizer used in the nursery. Controlled release fertilizers (CRF) can be applied to reduce or even to eliminate the need for top-dress fertilization. The CRF doses can vary according to the container volume, considering the different amount of substrate available for seedlings in different containers. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of Schizolobium parahyba seedlings produced in plastic tubes of 110 and 280 cm3, with different doses of CRF (15-09-12) (0, 3, 6 e 12 kg m-3), as well as the seedlings survival and the initial growth after post-planting in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro state. The study was conducted using a factorial design 2 x 4 (tube volumes x CRF doses), with five repetitions for each treatment. As substrate it was used sewage sludge from urban areas, which was dried in open air beds. The growth of seedlings at nursery was evaluated at 93 days after the transplant, and the survival and initial growth at five and twelve months after planting. The Schizolobium parahyba seedlings showed higher growth in 280 cm3 tubes and responded positively to the CRF application, where the most efficient dose was 8.3 kg cm3 for this plastic tube. Twelve months after planting, seedlings from all treatments showed survival below 80%, being under the standard recommended for forest restoration. The mortality of seedlings occurred in consequence of five months of water deficit in a sandy clay loam soil. Considering only nursery data, the combination of 280 cm3 plastic tubes, with the CRF dose of 8.3 kg cm3 are recommended to produce Schizolobium parahyba seedlings.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar técnica, química e biologicamente o biossólido proveniente da estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE) de Alegria, Rio de Janeiro, e inferir sobre sua aptidão como componente do substrato para produção de mudas de Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (aroeira pimenteira). Foram coletadas amostras significativas do biossólido, submetidas às análises química e biológica em um laboratório especializado, atendendo às especificações da legislação vigente (Resolução CONAMA nº 375/2006). No viveiro, foram testadas quatro diferentes formulações de substrato, compostas de diferentes proporções volumétricas de substrato comercial (SC) e biossólido (BIO), consistindo nos seguintes tratamentos: T1 (100% SC + 0% BIO); T2 (75% SC + 25% BIO); T3 (50% SC + 50% BIO); e T4 (0% SC + 100% BIO). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 4 tratamentos, 4 repetições de 18 mudas. O biossólido atendeu às especificações da legislação quanto à sua composição. Aos 120 dias após a semeadura foram mensuradas a altura da parte aérea e o diâmetro do coleto, observando que o crescimento das mudas foi diretamente proporcional à concentração de biossólido no substrato. O biossólido da ETE Alegria atende à legislação de uso agrícola e mostrou ser viável tecnicamente para a produção de mudas de aroeira pimenteira.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to technically, chemically and biologically characterize the biosolids from the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of Alegria, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and infer about their aptitude as a substrate component for the seedlings production of Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan. Significant samples of biosolid were collected and submitted to chemical and biological analysis in a specialized laboratory, according to the specifications of the current Brazilian law (CONAMA Resolution nº 375/2006). In the forest nursery, four different formulations of substrate, composed by different volumetric proportions of commercial substrate (CS) and biosolids (BIO) were tested, consisting of the following treatments: T1 (100% SC + 0% BIO); T2: (75% SC + 25% BIO); T3: (50% SC + 50% BIO); e T4: (0% SC + 100% BIO). The experimental design was CRD, each of the four treatments having four replications of eighteen seedlings. The biosolid met the legal specifications concerning its composition. Fifty days after sowing, shoot height and stem diameter were measured. It was observed, for both characteristics, that seedling growth was directly proportional to the concentration of sewage sludge in the substrate. Finally, the Alegria ETE’s biosolid attends the legislation and shows a technically viable alternative for the production of angico vermelho seedlings.

Resumo Neste trabalho foram comparados diferentes modelos estatísticos para a estimativa da biomassa individual de árvores, e estimados os estoques totais de biomassa e de carbono acima do solo, nos três compartimentos (arbóreo, herbáceo-arbustivo e serapilheira) de um cerrado sensu stricto típico no oeste da Bahia. Foi realizado o inventário florestal em 20 parcelas de 1000 m2 (20 m x 50 m). Para ajuste dos modelos estatísticos foram cortadas e pesadas 90 árvores de diferentes espécies e classes diamétricas. Foram ajustados modelos para o diâmetro medido a 30 cm do solo (D30cm≥5cm) e diâmetro medido a 1,30 m do solo (DAP1,30m≥3,5 cm). A equação escolhida foi aplicada aos dados das árvores levantados no inventário florestal, e assim foram estimados os estoques por hectare e total no compartimento arbóreo. As amostragens dos compartimentos herbáceo-arbustivo e serapilheira foram realizadas por subparcelas fixas. Foram alocadas sistematicamente 20 subparcelas de 4 m2 (2 m x 2 m) para amostragem do compartimento herbáceo-arbustivo e 20 subparcelas de 1 m2 (1 m x 1 m) para amostragem da serapilheira. O estoque de carbono foi estimado por fator de conversão da biomassa. A equação proveniente do ajuste do modelo de Schumacher & Hall (logarítmica) (R2 = 93,53%; Sxy = 44,92%) foi a escolhida para estimar o estoque de biomassa das árvores do cerrado estudado. A biomassa total acima do solo, considerando os três compartimentos, foi estimada em 18,77 Mg ha-1, o que corresponde a um estoque total de 8,67 Mg ha-1 de carbono. O compartimento arbóreo foi responsável pela maior parte dos estoques (58%), seguido da serapilheira (26%) e herbáceo-arbustivo (16%).

Abstract In this work, different statistical models were compared for estimating individual tree biomass and the total biomass and carbon stocks above the soil, in the three compartments (arboreal, herbaceous-shrub and litter) of a typical Cerrado in the west of Bahia state, Brazil. The forest inventory was carried out in 20 plots of 1000 m2 (20 m x 50 m). In order to fit the statistical models, 90 trees of different species and diameter classes were cut and weighed. Models were fitted for the diameter measured at 30 cm from the soil (D30cm≥5cm) and the diameter measured at 1.30 m from the soil (DAP1,30m≥3,5 cm). The equation chosen was applied to the data of the trees collected in the forest inventory, and thus, the stocks per hectare and the total in the tree compartment were estimated. Samplings of the herbaceous-shrub and litter compartments were performed by fixed subplots. For sampling of the herbaceous-shrub and litter compartments, 20 subplots of 4 m2 (2 m x 2 m) and 20 subplots of 1 m2 (1 m x 1 m) were systematically allocated, respectively. The carbon stock was estimated by the biomass conversion factor. The equation resulting from the adjustment of the Schumacher & Hall (logarithmic) model (R2 = 93.53%; Sxy = 44.92%) was chosen to estimate the biomass stock of the studied Cerrado trees. The total biomass above the soil, considering the three compartments, was estimated at 18.77 Mg ha-1, which corresponds to a Carbon total stock of 8.67 Mg ha-1. The arboreal compartment was responsible for most of the stocks (58%), followed by litter (26%) and herbaceous-shrub (16%).

Resumo Um dos problemas encontrados na formação de povoamentos visando à restauração florestal é a qualidade das mudas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar diferentes volumes de tubetes para a produção de mudas de Ceiba speciosa, utilizando o biossólido como substrato. O experimento constou da fase de produção das mudas e da avaliação do desempenho dessas no campo. Os tratamentos utilizados foram os tubetes de 55, 110, 180 e 280 cm3. Ambas as fases do experimento foram instaladas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, sendo a fase de viveiro composta por quatro repetições de 12 plantas, e a fase de campo composta por 20 mudas de cada tratamento, com altura e diâmetro mais próximos da média da última avaliação realizada no viveiro. Utilizando-se o biossólido como principal componente do substrato para a produção das mudas de Ceiba speciosa, e para as condições de sítio em que foi implantado o povoamento florestal, recomenda-se o uso do tubete de 110 cm3, pois neste ocorreu crescimento similar ao das plantas nos tubetes de maior volume, resultando em menor volume de substrato, menor área ocupada no viveiro e maior facilidade de transporte e manejo.

Abstract One of the problems encountered in the formation of stands aimed at forest restoration is the quality of the seedlings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the different volumes of tubes for the seedling production of Ceiba speciosa, using biosolids as a substrate. The experiment consisted of the seedlings production stage and evaluation of the performance in the field. The treatments were the tubes of 55, 110, 180 and 280 cm3. Both phases of this experiment were installed in a completely randomized design, with the stage of seedling production composed by four repetitions of 12 plants, and field stage composed by 20 seedlings from each treatment, with height and diameter closer to the average for the last assessment carried out in the nursery. Using biosolids as the main component of the substrate for the production of Ceiba speciosa seedlings, and for the site conditions where the forest stand was implanted, it is recommended to use the 110 cm3 tube, because in this tube occurred growth similar to plants in the tubes of larger volumes, resulting in lower volume of substrate, smaller area occupied in the seed-plot and greater ease of transport and handling.

ABSTRACT Biosolids is a problematic residual issue in Brazil and other developing countries, where it is common to discard this material in landfills and/or open dumps. However, biosolids can be recycled in agricultural and forestry activities, considering they have high contents of organic matter and nutrients. Therefore, their application in substrates to produce forest seedlings can be beneficial. The scope of this study is to evaluate substrates with different proportions of biosolids and coconut fiber in the growth and quality of seedlings of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna, a native species from South America that is largely used for landscaping and forest restoration. There were studied substrates with proportions varying between 25 to 100% of biosolids and 75 to 0% of coconut fiber to produce seedlings in containers (plastic tubes with 280 cm³). At 120 days after sowing, it was measured the growth, biomass and quality of the seedlings. In general aspects, the higher the proportion of biosolids in the substrate, the higher were the growth, biomass and quality. The biosolids favored the growth in shoot height and biomass more than in diameter and root biomass. Considering the positive results and the possibility of recycling biosolids, it is recommended the use of substrates containing from 50 to 100% of biosolids to produce Ceiba speciosa seedlings in 280 cm³ plastic tubes.

RESUMO Geralmente, a qualidade de mudas florestais é aferida somente na fase de viveiro, ignorando-se o principal objetivo que é a resposta das mudas após plantio a campo. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência do volume do recipiente de produção na qualidade morfológica de mudas de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. no viveiro e na sobrevivência e crescimento inicial a campo. Foram testados cinco volumes de recipientes (30, 55, 110, 180 e 280 cm³), constituindo-se os tratamentos. Aos 90 e 120 dias após a semeadura, foram avaliadas as características altura (H), o diâmetro do coleto (DC), a matéria seca aérea (MSA), a matéria seca das raízes (MSR), o Índice de Robustez (H/DC), a matéria seca total (MST), a relação entre a matéria seca aérea e das raízes (RMSAR), a densidade de raízes (DR) e o Índice de Qualidade de Dickson. Após a última avaliação em viveiro, as mudas foram plantadas a campo. Aos 120 dias do plantio, foram avaliados a sobrevivência, a altura (H), o diâmetro ao nível do solo (DNS), e calculado o crescimento relativo (CR). Embora as mudas produzidas nos três recipientes de maior volume tenham apresentado maiores valores morfológicos de qualidade na fase de produção, constatou-se que após a implantação a campo esta diferença tende a desaparecer, sendo possível produzir mudas de qualidade de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth., capazes de sobreviver, crescer e se desenvolver após o plantio, em qualquer um dos recipientes testados.

ABSTRACT Generally, seedling quality is measured only at the nursery, disregarding the main purpose that is the response of these seedlings after planting the field. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of the container volume in the morphological quality of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. seedlings in the nursery and its survival and initial growth. Five containers (30, 55, 110, 180 and 280 cm ³) were tested, constituting treatments. At 90 and 120 days after seeding, we evaluated height (H) and stem diameter (DC), dry biomass of shoot (MSA), and root dry biomass (MSR), Robustness Index (H/DC), total dry biomass (MST), the relationship between the shoot and root biomass (RMSAR), root density (DR) and Quality Index of Dickson (IQD). After the last measurement, seedlings were field planted. Evaluations consisted in the survival at 120 days after planting, measuring shoot height, diameter at ground level, and calculated the relative growth. Although the seedlings produced in the three larger containers have shown higher morphological quality values in the nursery, it was found that after planting at field this difference tends to disappear, being possible to produce quality seedlings of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth., able to survive, grow and develop after planting, in any of the tested containers.

RESUMO O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a qualidade do solo sob povoamentos florestais homogêneos (Acacia mangium - acácia, Mimosa artemisiana - mimosa e Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla - eucalipto) em comparação com área de pastagem de Brachiaria sp. (pasto) e floresta secundária. O trabalho foi conduzido na Fazenda Cachoeirão, em Além Paraíba - MG. A amostragem foi realizada nas camadas de 0,00 - 0,05 m e 0,05 - 0,10 m. Foram analisados os atributos químicos tais como teor de nutrientes, pH, acidez potencial (H + Al) e teor de carbono orgânico (COT), e os atributos físicos densidade do solo (Ds), volume total de poros (VTP) e a estabilidade de agregados. Os valores de saturação por bases foram muito baixos em todas as áreas. Dentre os povoamentos florestais, as áreas de mimosa e eucalipto proporcionaram maior adição de COT ao solo. Não houve diferença significativa para as variáveis Ds e VTP em nenhuma das camadas analisadas. O atributo químico que possibilitou melhor diferenciação entre as áreas foi o teor de carbono orgânico (COT). As florestas de mimosa e acácia foram as que mais contribuíram para a estabilização dos agregados do solo na camada de 0,00 - 0,05 m. Esta camada foi a que apresentou melhor diferenciação entre as áreas em relação à estabilidade de agregados. A área de pastagem foi a que mais se assemelhou à floresta secundária quanto à estabilidade de agregados nas camadas de 0,00 - 0,05 m e 0,05 - 0,10 m. Para a profundidade de 0,05 - 0,10 m, não foram verificadas diferenças estatísticas entre as áreas para as variáveis físicas estudadas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate soil quality in homogeneous forests (Acacia mangium - acacia, Mimosa Artemesiana - mimosa and Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla - eucalipto) compared with Brachiaria sp. - pasture and secondary forest. The study was conducted at Cachoeirão farm in Além Paraíba, MG state. Sampling was carried out in soil layers of 0.00 - 0.05 and 0.05 - 0.10m. Soil samples were characterized through chemical attributes and soil total organic carbon (TOC) and physical analysis: bulk density (BD), particle density (PD), total porosity (TP) and aggregate stability. The saturation values per base were low in all areas. Among the forest stands, mimosa and eucalipto were the ones that provided the highest TOC soil addition. There was no significant difference for the variables BD, PD and TP in any analysed layers. The chemical attribute that allowed better differentiation between the areas was the one of organic carbon content (TOC). Mimosa and acacia were the main contributors to the stabilization of soil aggregates in the first 0,05 m layer. This layer showed the best differentiation between areas in relation to aggregate stability. The pasture area is the one which more resembled the secondary forest on the stability of aggregates in the topsoil (0.0-0.10m). For the 0.05-0.10 m depth, there was no statistical difference between areas for any of the physical variables studied.

RESUMO O lodo de esgoto devidamente compostado (biossólido) apresenta em sua composição quantidades significantes de matéria orgânica e nutrientes para o crescimento vegetal. Desta forma, sua utilização na composição de substratos para produção de mudas florestais passa a representar não apenas um benefício ambiental, mas também uma ótima escolha do ponto de vista técnico e econômico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar química e fisicamente substratos à base de biossólido e substrato comercial e verificar o potencial destes para produção de mudas de Schinus terebinthifolius e Handroanthus heptaphyllus. Foram testadas diferentes proporções volumétricas de biossólido (BIO) misturadas ao substrato comercial (SC) para a produção das mudas em tubetes, consistindo nas seguintes formulações: T1 = 0% BIO + 100% SC; T2 = 25% de BIO + 75% SC; T3 = 50% de BIO + 50% SC; T4 = 100% de BIO + 0% SC. Aos 134 dias após a semeadura, foram avaliados os parâmetros morfológicos, altura da parte aérea (H) e diâmetro do coleto (D), matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA) e da matéria seca das raízes (MSR), relação altura diâmetro (H/D), relação entre a matéria seca da parte aérea e da matéria seca das raízes (MSA/MSR), e o Índice de Qualidade de Dickson (IQD). Quanto maior a proporção de biossólido no substrato, maior foi o teor de nutrientes, principalmente N, P e K, e maior foi a capacidade de retenção de água. O biossólido apresentou elevado potencial para composição de substratos na produção de mudas das espécies estudadas. Para Schinus terebinthifolius os melhores resultados de crescimento foram observados nos tratamentos T3 e T4, já para Handroanthus heptaphyllus, no tratamento T3.

ABSTRACT The properly composted sewage sludge (biosolid) presents significant amounts of organic matter and nutrients to the plant growth in its composition. Therefore, its utilization in a substrate composition for the seedlings production comes to represent, more than an environment benefit, a great choice from the technical and economical angle. This project aims to characterize biosolid substrates and commercial substrate chemically and physically, and to estimate their potential to generate Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi. and Handroanthus heptaphyllus (Vell.) Mattos seedlings. Different volumetric proportions of biosolid (BIO) mixed with commercial substrate (SC) were tested for tube seedlings production, consisting in the following formulas: T1 = 0% BIO + 100% SC; T2 = 25% BIO + 75% SC; T3 = 50% BIO + 50% SC; T4 = 100% BIO + 0% SC. A hundred and thirty-four days after sowing, the following morphological parameters were evaluated, height (H), diameter (D), aerial part dry matter, (MSPA), root dry matter (MSR), height diameter ratio (HD), the ratio of aerial part dry matter and root dry matter (MSPAMSR), and the Dickson Quality Index (IQD). The bigger the substrates biosolid proportion was, the bigger the nutrient level was, mainly of N, P, K, and a bigger capacity of water retention was also found. The biosolid presented high potential for substrate composition in seedling production in the related species. The best results for Schinus terebinthifolius growth were observed in T3 and T4 treatments; for the Handroanthus heptaphyllus, the best results were observed in the T3 treatment.
